Founded by Ben Affleck, the Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) is the first U.S. based advocacy and grant-making initiative wholly focused on working with and for the people of eastern Congo. We envision an eastern Congo vibrant with abundant opportunities for economic and social development, where a robust civil society can flourish. ECI believes that local, community-based approaches are essential to creating a sustainable and successful society in eastern Congo.  read more

    Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) received the star treatment despite traveling in a war-torn region.The Eastern Congo Initiative, founded by Ben Affleck, paid for the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee to visit the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda in December. The congressman got the chance to meet various government and civil society leaders while getting to witness first-hand some of ECI's projects. read more
