Organization's Own Description:
The Humpty Dumpty Institute (HDI) was established in 1998 by a small group of innovative and successful business entrepreneurs to tackle a few tough international problems --- to put "the pieces back together" through the creation of unique public-private partnerships. Although there is still much to be done, we have met with some success since our inception and we continue to seek out partners with whom we can turn good ideas into effective operational programs.
One of the Institute's core interests has always been the key relationship between the United States and the United Nations, and particularly how members of Congress view the international organization. Over the years, HDI has earned an impeccable reputation for strengthening ties between the U.S. Congress and the United Nations through a series of non-partisan programs that bring these two institutions closer together. HDI continues to be the only organization in the country that regularly sponsors visits by Members of Congress and their senior staff to the United Nations. To date, over 300 Members and their staff have participated in our programs. Our 22-member bipartisan Congressional Advisory Board ensures that our programs remain non-partisan and consistent with the informational needs of Congress.
One of HDI's most popular programs is a useful exercise in basic public diplomacy. Thousands of foreign diplomats representing 191 countries around the world work at U.N. Headquarters in New York City. However, during a diplomat's typical term of 3-4 years at the U.N., he or she rarely gets to see much of our nation's striking beauty and cultural diversity. Consequently, HDI conducts special tours around the United States designed specifically for U.N. Ambassadors. Working with state and municipal leaders around the country, we have taken over 60 diplomats to 10 different cities around the nation.
HDI and its founders have always had a strong passion to engage in the battle against landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). Here too, we have met with unqualified success over the years. We have raised approximately $10 million dollars directly to support mine-clearance projects in Asia and Africa and are managing several multi-million dollar mine action programs.
Additionally, there are some projects that HDI's founders put into place previously, like the Adopt-A- Minefield Program, that have raised additional millions since 1998. HDI has established strong bonds with both the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in its effort to demonstrate that mine clearance is a development issue. And it is through this continuing effort, that HDI's own agenda has expanded to include important humanitarian development work side-by-side with mine action. For example, in remote parts of Laos, we are not only funding the removal of UXO from around schools, we are also funding the feeding of 10,000 undernourished kids, planting gardens, and renovating school houses. In Sri Lanka, we are clearing landmines and revitalizing the once thriving dairy industry in the Jaffna Peninsula.
Closer to home, HDI will initiate a new program in 2008 providing 20,000 food stamp recipients in Upstate New York with coupons and incentives that will double their purchase of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables throughout the state.
