* Marked salary data appeared in the official records from the listed fiscal year even though it pertains to a different fiscal year.

Congressional staff salaries shown are the amount paid in the period shown. They are not annual salaries. Because bonuses may be included here and other payments may not be (most notably with aides working for multiple offices or for a political campaign committee), please use caution in extrapolating annual salaries from the figures shown here.

We have taken great care to have this website reflect the official record, but we have discovered a handful of errors both in the official record and our own transcription. Just heard of your op-ed. Thank you for being sensible. As for the accusation that you "stabbed your bosses in the back" I agree that you did, and that the country needed you to expose the Hill GOP's lunacy. Thank you for the courage.

I think that Mike's Op Ed is right on the money. I was briefly a Congressional staffer during the mid-1970s and have worked both in private business and on public policy since. Mike's observations dovetail with what I have seen first-hand. Back in the '70s, Members of Congress had great respect for the institution, and this transcended partisan lines. As well, it was recognized that members of both parties needed to reach across the aisle to pass good legislation, and the ability to broker bipartisan deals was prized. Yes, Republicans and Democrats competed hard to control the Congress, but they viewed all members and the institution of Congress with respect. I think that things started to get really nasty in the 1990s in the Gingrich years, and have continued to deteriorate since. In the main, I'd say that many of the moderate members of the GOP have been replaced by conservatives who view Democrats, Congress and government with suspicion. It's a sad day when a Republican front-runner for President makes thinly veiled threats against the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. It's an equally sad day when you have to refer to the government as the "gummint" to be taken seriously by a significant Republican voting bloc. And it's even worse when this same GOP voting bloc tries to invalidate the views of Congressional staffers and other federal employees merely because they've worked in the public sector (usually elegantly referred to as "living off the gummint teat.") I was originally a Republican, and have respected many Republicans from Lincoln's time through earlier in this decade. But as the extremism and crassness of the Republican right increases, I fear for the nation and the Republican Party. The Grand Old Paarty is a shell of its former self. Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Jerry Ford, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan and George H.W, Bush all made significant and positive contributions to the U.S. Even George W. Bush showed respect for the federal govern

Mike Lofgren confirms many of our suspicions about the modern Republican Party. I was a Republican and my political heroes are still Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Both country before politics politicians. But I left after the GOP became the 19th hole for corporate interests and billionaires. They slept at night knowing that the philosophies of Ayn Rand (self-sacrifice is evil) and Milton Friedman (greed is good) supported their activity. However, Lofgren describes GOP leaders plotting to sabotage Congress and discredit government to lower generic approval ratings of Congress and government, knowing that the anti-government party (GOP) would end up the relative winner. That by definition is insurrectionism, subject to investigation and suppression under Art 1 Sect 8 of the US Constitution. It's crossing the line between obstructing an agenda and the purposeful destruction of government institutions. "Anti-American activities" indeed Ms Bachmann! Shame on post-95 neocons and Teabaggers!

I really enjoyed the interview, I just don't get why people can only be truthful after they have made a comfortable living being part of a machine that they allegedly morally oppose. With that said, what can we, the American citizens, do to invoke positive change and bring some truth to the election process. Does anyone think it's posible to destroy the current 2 party system? How would it be done?

Doesn't everyone realize he "retired" because he thought his pension benefits were assured now and he was afraid he wouldn't get them later? He said so. He seems like another government parasite. No wonder he doesn't like us cynics (or either party -doesn't like Dems either, look it up) who think any 28 year employee of the government is no better than a welfare queen.

A reformed whore with a conscience.

As an ex-Democrat (left in 1974, after reading "It Didn't Start With Watergate" by Victor Lasky, and "War is the Health of the State" by Randolph Bourne) who never saw any compelling reason to "switch" to the GOP, the second corps of the warfare-welfare state political army, I understand your frustration with the centrist parties, though some of your analysis is quite blinkered by the false images that are benchmarks of your perspective. No doubt more will emerge about your history as the partisan bickering continues. Both the "attaboy!" and "traitor!" comments are decidedly premature.
