Pocan town hall shows Democratic focus on student debt

Posted by John Sugden on May 15, 2014

Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) will hold a town hall today focusing on student loan debt, highlighting a strategy by Democrats in Congress to make this an issue in the upcoming midterms.

With support from the White House, Democrats in the both the House and Senate have introduced legislation this month that would allow those paying off loans to pay lower interest rates. Pocan sponsored a bill this month which would allow those with unpaid student loans to refinance and pay an interest rate of 4 percent.

"Two-thirds of Americans now leave college weighed down by massive student loan debt, unable to achieve their dreams and contribute to the growth of the economy," Pocan said. Government figures show student debt now amounts to more than $1.1 trillion and continues to rise.

Pocan's town hall in Madison is being sponsored by One Wisconsin Now, a progressive group. Pocan is a member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee.
