Longtime staffer leaves the congressional nest, flies to defense lobbyist

American Defense International recruited a longtime staffer to deepen their government affairs ranks this month.

Matthew Weinstein joined the defense lobbying firm from the office of Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.) where he had served as legislative director since late 2013. His will take the role of vice president of government affairs with ADI, a firm that provides government relations services to defense contractors.

Byrne's office was the last in a long line of congressional positions for Weinstein, whose congressional journey began immediately after graduating college.

In 2006, Weinstein came to the Hill as an intern under former Rep. Jo Bonner (R-Ala.). He left after several months for to join the office of fellow Alabaman Rep. Mike Rogers, where he moved up the ranks from staff assistant to legislative assistant over the next three years.

In 2010, Weinstein returned to Bonner's office until the congressman's resignation from Congress in August 2013. Weinstein stayed in the office through the transition and became legislative director for Byrne when he took over Bonner's seat.

Byrne and Rogers both sit on the House Armed Services Committee, and Bonner was a member of the Defense Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee. In all three offices, Weinstein worked on issues related to defense appropriations and policies.
