DeLauro aide embarks on a voyage to Mars

Posted by LegiStorm on Jan. 11, 2016

A senior policy adviser to Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) has taken her agricultural and nutrition expertise on a voyage to plant her flag at Mars - the candy company, not the red planet.

Kelly Horton, who has been on DeLauro's legislative team since 2013, left in December to be North America policy director for Mars Inc. The company owned by the sometimes-secretive Mars family is known best for its chocolate products, like M&M's, Snickers, Dove, Milky Way, Twix and 3 Musketeers. But it also owns the Wrigley gum brand and also owns pet care, food and drink lines of business too.

On the latest lobbying filing, Mars indicated it was trying to influence sugar reform, the Mexican anti-dumping case, country-of-origin labeling, Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee process, and inclusion of pet food labeling in the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015.

Horton, who earned a master's degree from Tufts University in food policy and applied nutrition, previously worked for National Council on the Aging and Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.).
