New congressional staffer was world-champion shooter

Posted by Sean Myers on March 9, 2016

A new staffer for Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) is a five-time medalist in skeet shooting at the World Championships.

Terry Bankey, a new constituent liaison based in Garden Grove, had an illustrious career as a skeet shooter before joining Congress. She was a part of the women's team that won the silver medal in Olympic skeet shooting at the World Championships three times — in 1978, 1979 and 1994. She also took the silver medal in the individual contest in 1978. Additionally, Bankey was a part of the women's team that took home the gold medal from the 1993 World Championship double trap contest.

Olympic skeet shooting involves shooting clay targets thrown from two towers on opposite sides of a semi-circle, which marks where the shooter can stand. In double trap shooting, the targets are thrown in pairs from bunkers housed underground in front of the shooters.
