Top legislative aide collects life insurance job

Posted by Nate Hoffman on May 12, 2016

A senior Democratic legislative staffer has insured himself a new government affairs job after his boss announced his retirement from public service.

Michael Gleeson, the former legislative director to retiring Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), has been hired by the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting as its director of legislative affairs. The Reston, Va.-based trade association represents life insurance companies and has most recently lobbied on various bills including H.R. 26, the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2015. The bill passed Congress and was enacted into law January 2015.

The Chicago native has prior financial policy experience both on and off the Hill. He was a congressional reporter for Tax Analysts and The Hill. In addition, he served as a tax legislative assistant to McDermott before being promoted to the top legislative job in the office in 2013. He holds three advanced degrees, including a master's in taxation from the American University Kogod School of Business.
