Rep. Wasserman Schultz holds first Zika town hall

Posted by LegiStorm on May 24, 2016
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) has become the first to hold a town hall for constituents specifically focused on the Zika virus.

Zika can be transmitted by mosquitos or through sexual contact and can cause birth defects. The mosquitos carrying the virus have been found throughout the Carribean and Central America and visitors to those countries have returned to the U.S. with the virus.

Wasserman Schultz's home state of Florida has been hit particularly hard, with at least 113 cases reported.

In the call last week, she was joined by Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Dr. Stephen Redd, from the Centers for Disease Control, during the telephone town hall on Thursday.

The congresswoman is not the only one concerned about the global health threat. Congress has been focused on the U.S. response and allocation of funding for preventative measures and treatment.

Today, 11 senators sent a letter to the U.S. Olympic Committee expressing concern for athletes competing in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
