Libertarian law firm lobbying to end asset forfeiture

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Sept. 7, 2016

Two weeks after filing an asset forfeiture lawsuit against the city of Albuquerque, N.M., a public-interest law firm disclosed that it's lobbying Congress to stop the practice once and for all.

The libertarian Institute for Justice is lobbying on asset forfeiture reform and the DUE PROCESS Act, which the House is expected to take up this month.

In its new lawsuit, the Institute for Justice alleges that the city wrongfully seized the car of Albuquerque resident Arlene Harjo, "despite [civil forfeiture] being outlawed in 2015."

Last year, the group reportedly filed another lawsuit on behalf of New Mexico state senators Daniel Ivey-Soto and Lisa Torraco, who claimed that the city's continued forfeiture practices were illegal. The case was reportedly dismissed.

Steven Duffield, president of Endgame Strategies, is handling the lobbying work. Duffield previously served as policy director and chief counsel to the Senate Republican Conference Committee under former Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.).
