For new chief of staff, Sen. Hoeven beats beets

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on April 2, 2018

Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) is sweetening his staff roster with the return of a U.S. Beet Sugar Association lobbyist.

Cassie Bladow begins as Hoeven's chief of staff next week. She previously handled Hoeven's agriculture, public land and transportation portfolios from 2011 to 2015, when she left the Hill for the USBSA.

At the trade group, Bladow lobbied Congress and the USDA on food labeling, trade and other sugar-industry issues. USBSA spent at least $1.8 million to sway the federal government last year.

Sugarbeets are big business in North Dakota. The state's farmers harvested more than 6 million tons of the product last year.
