Conservative non-profit gains leverge in congressional oversight

A conservative think tank hopes to push favorable legislation with a new strategic hire from the Hill.

Cari Kelly, an oversight counsel on the Senate Budget Committee under Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), has signed on to become a legislative strategist for the Heritage Action for America. She is tasked with helping the Heritage Foundation's sister organization with financial services, housing, immigration, religious liberty, Second Amendment and social issues. The registered-501(c)(4) organization advocated last year for pro-conservative policies on immigration reform, gun rights and Obamacare.

At the Budget Committee, Kelly was tasked with discussing wasteful spending with federal inspectors general, researching proposed amendments and creating a hotline for constituents to report government waste, fraud or abuse, according to her LinkedIn profile. The Alabama native also interned for Rep. Jo Bonner (R-Ala.) in summer 2010.
