Intern-turned staffer has advice for Hill newbies

Posted by Nate Hoffman on Feb. 21, 2014
Sen. Richard Blumenthal's (D-Conn.) newest legislative correspondent may have just taken her first real job since college, but she has much wisdom about living in Washington to impart to newcomers.

Kim Quarantello, who interned for her now-boss in summer 2011, authored "How to Survive DC: A Wellesley Summer Intern Series" for the Wellesley Wire. In it, she tells her fellow classmates a mix of practical guidance, such as "learn to love Safeway", and "get over yourself" since "the sooner you can accomplish this simple task, the better your summer will be."

At the same time, Quarantello suggests that interns should maximize their time in the nation's capital, whether it is finding a brunch hotspot in Georgetown or going to a Nats game. "Whether or not you actually appreciate baseball is totally irrelevant," she writes, "the stadium is great and you will probably meet more fans cheering for the team they are playing against than actual National supporters!"

In addition to her own Washington experience, Quarantello worked as a summer organizer with Obama for America. She began her tenure as Blumenthal's legislative correspondent this week.
