Longtime Rep. Solomon Ortiz (D-Texas) registered his first client as a lobbyist, teaming with a consortium of Azerbaijani business and educational interests.

Renaissance Associates, a pro-government business group in the autocratic and oil-rich nation, aims to promote the Republic of Azerbaijan in the U.S. with the help of Ortiz on, "trade, tourism and defense-related issues," according to recently filed lobbying paperwork. Renaissance has been represented for years by the American lobbying firm Bob Lawrence and Associates, which subcontracted with Ortiz's firm, Solomon P. Ortiz Holdings LLC.

Ortiz co-founded the Congressional Azerbaijan Caucus with Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.) in 2004. He lost re-election in 2010 to Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas).
