Rep. Jolly treats the enemy of his enemy as his friend

Posted by Nate Hoffman on April 15, 2014

With his new legislative hiring, Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.) has taken to heart the meaning of an ancient proverb: "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

The freshman congressman has hired L.J. Govoni as a legislative assistant. In December, Govoni announced he was running to become a state representative, filing nomination papers for Florida's 69th House district race once the incumbent, Kathleen Peters, announced her candidacy to fill Rep. Bill Young's (R-Fla.) seat. Peters went on to lose the congressional Republican primary to eventual winner Jolly by a 14-point margin, leaving her with the race against Govoni for the state house seat.

Last month, Govoni announced he would suspend his campaign, handing Peters an almost guaranteed victory in the state legislature this upcoming November.

Prior to December, Govoni was the president of Clearwater, Fla.-based Boston Capital Leasing LLC. He earned his master's degree in finance from the University of Tampa.
