Drinking like a fish will get you caught

LOS ANGELES – Boaters who plan to drink alcohol on the water this weekend should think twice; the Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies are working together to stop boating under the influence as part of a nationwide operation, June 28 - 30, 2013.

The Coast Guard and local law enforcement will be boarding boats in the waters between Morro Bay, Calif., and Dana Point, Calif., to perform safety inspections and check for boaters under the influence of alcohol or drugs as part of Operation Dry Water.

Media wishing to interview the Coast Guard about Operation Dry Water and the importance of sober boating should contact Coast Guard Public Affairs at (310) 521-4260.

Boating under the influence is just as dangerous as being in a car while intoxicated.  The intent of Operation Dry Water is get the message across to boaters, that if they are operating a vessel while intoxicated there will be consequences.

Alcohol use continues to be a leading cause in recreational boating related accidents, injuries and deaths.  In fact, 17 percent of boating fatalities are a result of alcohol use.
