New Nevada legislature term begins; new legislators added to StateStorm

Posted on Wednesday, November 09, 2016

All newly elected Nevada state senators and assemblymembers have been added to the StateStorm Directory. While the new Nevada state legislators will not be officially sworn in until 2/6/2017, by law their term begins on the day after election day.

We will continue to monitor the Nevada state legislature and update the StateStorm Directory with committee assignments, leadership positions and official contact details as more information becomes available.

StateStorm, a database of contact, biographical and committee information for the nearly 7,500 state legislators serving in all 50 states, is available to Pro Premium subscribers.

Added profiles on members-elect, page to track new member hires

Posted on Tuesday, November 08, 2016

LegiStorm has added profiles for each member-elect.  Learn more about the incoming members of Congress at our Find a Member page

We also re-launched the New Member Hires page, where we will post the latest on staff hires by the members-elect/freshman members through the early months of the new session.  LegiStorm's powerful technology and processes ensure that we track staff changes faster than anyone, and new information is added daily.

In addition to seeing recent updates on the LegiStorm site, LegiStorm subscribers can get custom email notifications of staff updates by setting contact list Lightning Alerts. Use the Advanced Staff Search to create a custom contact list -- based on offices, roles, issues covered, geography, or a combination of factors. If you choose the Set a Lightning Alert option on the list's management page, we'll update your custom list each night and send you an email when people are added, removed or modified (i.e., staff who change positions).

Enhanced notes allow bulk csv export, adding files and dates, improved search and more

Posted on Monday, October 24, 2016

Today we are releasing several updates that expand the functionality, improve search and add easy export options to our notes system.

Subscribers have long been able to add personal notes to any person or organization page and can manage these notes on their profile under the My Notes tab.  The latest notes enhancements allow users to:

  • specify a date and time for a note to track meetings or other events,
  • upload related files, such as agendas, photos or other documents,
  • share related files with any registered LegiStorm user via a unique link,
  • export individual notes as iCal appointments,
  • search existing notes by full-text, date or associated person or office (including by custom Member list), and
  • bulk export notes in a single CSV file.

Existing notes will not be affected, though Subscribers can edit older notes to add dates and files.  As always, new notes are "private" and visible only to the creator by default.  However, users on multi-seat subscriptions can choose to share notes with others on their subscription by marking notes as "public."

Analyze representative expenses by year and category

Posted on Wednesday, September 28, 2016

LegiStorm launched enhanced reporting for official expenditures by members of the House of Representatives, letting all site visitors easily see and compare annual spending from 2010 to the present.

LegiStorm has long provided searchable full-text access to the official reports of receipts and expenditures for members, committees and leadership offices of the House and Senate.

Our new Expense Summaries page lets you view House expenses by party, state and custom member groups, comparing total expenses, expenses as a percent of the member representational allowance budget, and the percent of expenses reported late. Expense summary data can be filtered by year and spending category.

For LegiStorm subscribers, this data is also displayed on the Official Expenses page under the Disclosures tab of the profile of all representatives who served since 2010. This page displays an overview of yearly total expenses, expenses vs. budget and expenses reported late for a member, as well as a comparison of the member's spending in each category as compared to the House average.

For more information about the enhanced expense data, please see About Expenses

New Lightning Alerts notify subscribers of staff, legislator and member changes

Posted on Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Today, LegiStorm launched Lightning Alerts for contact lists, letting LegiStorm Pro Premium subscribers receive custom email notifications about promotions, position changes, resignations and new hires/appointments.

To set a new Lightning Alert, create a new contact list of staffers, members or state legislators (or select an existing list from the Contact Lists section of your Profile) and look for the "Set a Lightning Alert" option.  When an Alert is set, we will refresh your list once each day based on the saved search criteria and email you if any people have been added (newly meet the list criteria), removed (no longer meet the list criteria) or modified (staffers on the list who have changed positions or offices).

You can view, edit, remove and share any Lightning Alerts created for contact lists, StormFeed press releases and tweets, policy reports or town halls in the Lightning Alerts section of your Profile.

LegiStorm adds Q2 2016 salary records for House staffers

Posted on Monday, September 05, 2016
LegiStorm has processed and published the latest salary records for staffers in the House of Representatives that were released last Monday by the Clerk of the House. Over the last week, LegiStorm has cleaned and extensively edited the data, which covers the period from April 1 to June 30, before publishing the salary information online. The next release of salaries is expected in late November, including reported data from both the House (which releases data quarterly) and the Senate (which releases data semi-annually).

LegiStorm Pro subscribers can generate contact lists indicating changes since last download

Posted on Monday, August 29, 2016

Starting today, LegiStorm Pro subscribers will see a "CSV with Changes" option after they generate a new downloadable CSV file of contact information. CSV with Changes is a cost effective way for subscribers to keep their records up-to-date as promotions, position changes, resignations and new hires/appointments occur.

Like the familiar "Generate CSV" feature available for custom-created staffer, member and state legislator lists, the CSV with Changes option creates a downloadable file with complete, up-to-date contact information for all people on the list.  However, the CSV with Changes file contains an extra column that indicates changes to the list since the previous CSV file was generated:

  • Added = Contacts not in the prior CSV download
  • Modified = Staffers who have changed offices or positions since the prior CSV download
  • Removed = People who appeared in the prior CSV download, but no longer meet the search criteria

The cost of creating a CSV with Changes file is calculated based on the number of Added or Modified people only. For example, if three people are added to a 20-person list, you will only be charged for three contacts if you choose to create a CSV with Changes.

When you generate a CSV with Changes, the target list will be updated based on the list's saved search criteria.  Therefore, this option is not available for ad hoc lists (i.e., where individuals are added one at a time) and will overwrite any customizations to criteria-based lists.  Additionally, the CSV with Changes option is only available if a full CSV file has been generated since August 29, 2016.

To learn more about contact lists on LegiStorm, see our About Contact Lists page.

Launch of interactive maps for state legislature districts

Maps of state legislative districts are now available in the StateStorm state legislator directory.

In addition to browsing by name, district, leadership position or committee, LegiStorm Pro Premium subscribers now have the option to navigate the state legislator directory via an interactive map.  The new View Map tab displays district boundaries within a state, allowing subscribers to view and build contact lists of state senators or representatives by clicking on a particular area or location.

New option to filter for state legislature leadership on StateStorm Advanced Search

Posted on Tuesday, August 16, 2016

LegiStorm added a new filter to the StateStorm State Legislators Advanced Search page, providing an option to limit search results to those individuals who currently hold a leadership position within the state legislature (e.g., speaker of the house, majority whip). As with all advanced search criteria, LegiStorm users can apply this filter when creating custom contact lists.

StateStorm, a database of contact, biographical and committee information for the nearly 7,500 state legislators serving in all 50 states, is available to Pro Premium subscribers.

Subscription managers can request access to usage reports

Posted on Monday, July 18, 2016

Subscription managers of multi-seat LegiStorm Pro Premium accounts may now request access to usage reports to more easily manage the users included in their subscription.

Available usage statistics include counts of saved custom contact lists and Lightning Alerts, as well as page views in the past month, quarter, year and all time for each registered user.  Reports for subscriptions which allow IP access will also display the number of page views and unique visitors (i.e., cookies) by month for anonymous users authenticated via IP address.  Once activated, reports are visible on the subscription management page in the My Profile section of the site.

To request access to usage reports, please email or call us at 202-360-4172.
