Center for Design Innovation

Information

Organization's Own Description:

In 2003 a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy recommended accelerating the growth of design-intensive businesses in northwest North Carolina. The goal is to help transition the economy from reliances on tobacco, textiles and furniture manufacturing to knowledge-based services and creative enterprises.
The State responded by establishing the Center for Design Innovation in 2005, as a multi-campus center within the University of North Carolina system. The aim is to spawn new businesses and jobs through design research and practice, to serve and improve the health, education, communication and entertainment sectors.

A second study in 2005 identified focuses for the design center, recommending in particular the advanced technology areas of motion capture and rapid prototyping. Techniques in motion data capture and analysis, data visualization and modeling, and rapid prototyping support creative activity to generate designs for animations, video games, interactive narratives, medical devices, furnishings, and responsive objects and environments.

In 2007 CDI began operations at an interim site in downtown Winston-Salem, while awaiting construction of the permanent facility. The collaborators work across disciplines, institutions and economic sectors to push the boundaries of existing knowledge and practice.
