Speaker's adviser jumps to professional philanthropy

Posted by Sean Myers on Jan. 29, 2016

A career legislative staffer has left her role as chief policy adviser to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) for a job in a nonprofit organization that promotes philanthropy.

Katherine Haley, who has been on Capitol Hill since 2002, has joined the advocacy group Philanthropy Roundtable as senior director for K-12 education programs. Haley had been an assistant to the Speaker of the House since 2011, serving both Ryan and Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) on education, antipoverty and other social issues.

The Philanthropy Roundtable's mission is to "foster excellence in philanthropy, to protect philanthropic freedom, to assist donors in achieving their philanthropic intent, and to help donors advance liberty, opportunity, and personal responsibility in America and abroad."  Haley will focus on philanthropic missions in the educational realm. An advocate for school choice, she was instrumental in the successful reauthorization of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to low-income students so they can attend D.C. private schools.

Haley previously served as a policy adviser and legislative assistant for former Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) and as a legislative aide for former Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas).

A native of Arizona, Haley earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Duke University and her master's in government from Johns Hopkins University.
