House aide, ball player swings for a new committee job

Posted by Nate Hoffman on May 20, 2016

A professional baseball player-turned-Hill staffer has gotten on base with the House Homeland Security Committee.

Kris Carlson, who used to play minor league ball in New York, just got promoted to clerk for the House Homeland Security Committee's Transportation Security Subcommittee under Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.). The Wenatchee, Wash.-native was a legislative correspondent for Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Wash.) for the past two years. He began his congressional career as an intern for Reichert.

Before the 2012 season, the Washington State University graduate was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the MLB's Amateur Draft. He pitched in the Rays' farm system for the Gulf Coast League Rays, the Charlotte Stone Crabs in the Florida State League and the Hudson Valley Renegades in the New York-Penn League. Carlson earned a 3.86 ERA in 23 1/3 innings over 19 games, in which he gave up 21 hits and 12 runs, with 16 career strikeouts.

The Renegades went on to win the league championship series 2-1 against the Tri-City Valley Cats, though Carlson did not pitch during the playoffs.
