Health care lobbyist joins office of health care-focused senator

Posted by LegiStorm on June 20, 2016

As the Society of Thoracic Surgeons' assistant director of government relations, Elyssa Hesky Malin lobbied for a wide range of health care issues. Now, she's working on Capitol Hill for Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who's spent substantial time fighting against Big Tobacco.

Markey, who is a longtime advocate of health care and medical research, cites health, medical research and disabilities as his core priorities. This month, his office released a report on Chamber of Commerce tobacco lobbyists.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons represents more than 7,200 surgeons, researchers and other healthcare professionals specializing in surgeries of the heart, lung and esophagus. Malin joined Markey's last month as a global health research fellow after a two-year stint with the nonprofit.

Prior to lobbying for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Malin worked as a legislative and regulatory analyst for America's Health Insurance Plans and as a legislative assistant for Molina Healthcare.

Malin received an MBA and MA in government from Johns Hopkins and a BA in Spanish and international relations from the University of California, Davis.
