Fed up with VW case, car-charging company hires lobbyists

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Nov. 3, 2016

The country's largest charging-station company for electric vehicles has enlisted lobbying firm Arnold & Porter in its battle to save its industry.

ChargePoint opposes the terms of Volkswagen's settlement with the U.S. government, brought on over claims that the car manufacturer had cheated on emissions tests. Earlier this month, ChargePoint asked a federal judge to change the terms of the $2 billion agreement, arguing that the settlement could have "potentially disastrous" effects on the industry, according to an industry publication. The settlement would require Volkswagen to fund electric charging efforts, which ChargePoint fears will flood the market with competing dollars.

Now, the company discloses that it's officially lobbying the federal government on vague issues "related to [the] electric vehicle industry." Arnold & Porter lobbyists assigned to the case include Kristine Blackwood, former chief counsel to the Senate Special Committee on Aging, and Greg Louer, ex-policy director to Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and former Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-Ga.).
