Freshman rep. loses chief of staff to lobbying

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Feb. 15, 2017

As it makes its entrance into Washington, one of Florida's top lobbying firms has prematurely snagged a freshman member's chief of staff.

Dan McFaul came onboard with Rep. Matt Gaetz with the intention of spending a few months traning Gaetz's deputy chief of staff, Amanda Cogan, to take over as for McFaul. Cogan's promotion came sooner than expected when McFaul accepted a partner position with Ballard Partners only a few weeks into the 115th Congress.

Ballard Partners opened its D.C. office earlier this month to give clients better access to the Trump administration, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. One of Ballard's key clients has been the Trump Organization itself, and Ballard helped Trump during the presidential campaign in Florida.

The firm's inaugural federal clients include Amazon, the American Health Care Association and the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, not to mention important Florida players like the U.S. Sugar Corp. and Florida Power and Light Co.
