Congresswoman taking home James Beard Award

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on June 22, 2017

With D.C.'s new-found footing as a destination for foodies, it should come as no surprise that several Washingtonians are taking home prestigious James Beard Foundation Awards this year. Winners include renowned baker Mark Furstenberg, organic-restaurant trailblazer Nora Pouillon and, of course, Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine). Huh?

The James Beard Foundation, whose annual awards are known as "the Oscars of the food world," will honor the Maine Democrat in October with a Leadership Award for "her support of national policies that promote healthy food, local and regional food systems, and organic agriculture."

It's not the first time the organic-farmer-turned-congresswoman has received accolades for her work in the food world. In 2014, Fortune and Food & Wine magazines ranked the congresswoman as #2 in their list of the "most innovative women in food and drink." She also owns Nebo Lodge, a critically acclaimed inn and restaurant near her home in North Haven, Maine.
