Three representatives on pace to overspend 2018 budgets

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on July 2, 2018

Three representatives are on pace to outspend their 2018 office budgets, according to a new LegiStorm analysis of member expenses.

So far, this year's top spender is Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), who spent 26.65 percent of his budget in the first quarter of 2018. The average representative spent 19.78 percent of his or her annual budget during that same time.

Deutch's district is home to the Parkland high school where a mass shooter killed seventeen students and teachers last winter. The lawmaker spent 17 percent of his office's budget on printing costs and franked mail to his constituents. The average member has so far spent only four percent of expenses on mass mailings.

Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.) follows Deutch with 26.43 percent of his budget gone, including 26 percent of those expenses spent on franked mail and printing. Graves is joined by Rep. Luke Messer (R-Ind.), whose mass mailings to constituents made up a 34 percent of his expenses ahead of Indiana's Republican primary, which ended Messer's Senate bid.
