Information
Organization's Own Description:
The House and Senate Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) Caucuses are bipartisan groups originally formed in the late 1990s to increase awareness of renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE) technologies in the United States. These caucuses do not lobby for specific legislation.
The Senate Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus was officially established in May 1998 by Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) and fellow founding members Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Tim Johnson (D-SD). Its mission statement is: "We strive to increase awareness of the various forms of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies in the United States. As a bipartisan group of Senators, representing all parts of the country, this Caucus does not take positions on any issues or legislation."
EESI was involved in the founding of both the House and Senate Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (REEE) Caucuses. In the mid 1990s, EESI approached Congressional offices that were interested in renewable energy and energy efficiency issues and discussed the formation of bipartisan caucuses to promote such issues in federal policymaking. While the caucuses do not lobby for specific legislation, they regularly and effectively disseminate information about renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Such information helps inspire and muster support for clean energy legislation.
EESI regularly collaborates with both Caucuses as a way to distribute information about renewable energy and energy efficiency. In particular, EESI works with the Caucuses to co-sponsor briefings on key energy and environmental issues. The Caucuses' headline event is the Congressional Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency EXPO + Forum held every year in early summer and organized by the Sustainable Energy Coalition, of which EESI is a member.
