Organization's Own Description:
The Congressional Hepatitis Caucus serves as an informal group of Members dedicated to the issues related to Hepatitis and educating other members on this important subject. Over 5 million people living in the United States have hepatitis B or C, with the vast majority unaware they are affected. The diseases afflict ethnic minorities at a disproportional rate, with Asian Americans accounting for over half of type B cases, and type C occurring twice as frequently in African Americans. According to a 2011 Center for Disease Control report, California ranks 3rd in the number of tuberculosis cases in the United States. California, Texas, New York, and Florida account for 50% of the national case total. Santa Clara County has one of the highest national tuberculosis rates and is ranked 3rd highest in California. I have fought to ensure education and treatment funding comes to Santa Clara County and other impacted counties.
