Biography:

As a mom, attorney, and community leader, Kathy Manning has spent many years bringing people together to solve problems in our community, making it a better place for all of us.

Kathy’s great-grandparents came to this country fleeing religious persecution with nothing but a determination to work hard and get a good education for their children. Kathy’s father worked for Ford Motor Company for 40 years and her mom was a public school teacher. From them, Kathy learned the importance of perseverance, the value of education, and the importance of giving back to your community.

After graduating from Harvard University and the University of Michigan Law School, Kathy moved with her husband to his hometown of Greensboro, N.C. in 1987, wh ere they have raised their three children. After serving as a partner at a major law firm for 15 years, Kathy left to start her own small business.

As a community and nonprofit leader, Kathy has held leadership positions within numerous organizations, including United Way, Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, the National Conference for Community and Justice, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Kathy also recently served on the Bennett College Re-Engineering Committee to help chart a bright future for the college. In her community and nonprofit work, Kathy worked to provide job retraining, mortgage assistance, food and healthcare for people thrown out of work by the Great Recession. She also worked to ensure school readiness programs for underprivileged children, make college more affordable for local high school students, and to help retired North Carolinians live with dignity.

Kathy has also worked tirelessly to spur economic development in Greensboro so our area could attract new businesses that will provide the good paying jobs we need. Kathy helped spearhead the effort to build the Greensboro Children’s Museum, Triad Stage, and the new Tanger Center for the Performing Arts. Kathy was also the first woman to lead one of the largest charitable, faith-based organizations in the world.

Kathy is the recipient of various awards for her service to the community, including the 2014 Charles Duncan McIver Award given by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to honor distinguished North Carolina public servants and the 2013 Jim Roach Downtown Person of the Year Award presented by Downtown Greensboro. She was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Leader Hall of Fame in 2020.

When a chronic illness struck one of her daughters, Kathy experienced firsthand the frustration of fighting with big insurance companies and confronting outrageous drug prices, as well as the reality that having a pre-existing condition could prevent her daughter from getting insurance in the future.

As a representative, Kathy brings her record of getting things done to a broken Washington. She knows that creating opportunity requires good paying jobs, affordable and accessible health care, and the education and training necessary to prepare people for tomorrow’s economy.

Kathy has spent her life bringing people together to make our community a better place for all, and now she has taken her skills and determination to Washington to fight for hard-working North Carolinians and our country. See more >>
