Obama, Biden release financial disclosures

Posted by LegiStorm on May 17, 2011

President Barack Obama books have made him a millionaire, while Vice President Joe Biden's assets are far more pedestrian.

The White House released the annual financial disclosurs by Obama and Biden, revealing their assets and liabilities. Obama's form showed he made between $1-5 million in royalty income from his book "Dreams from My Father," the same range as his 2010 filing. His royalty income for his other major book, "The Audacity of Hope" fell from the $1-5 million range to between $100,001-$1 million.

The amounts are not exact because the forms call for all items' value to be listed as a range rather than requiring specific numbers.

The only major change in Biden's report was a Wilmington Savings Fund Society savings account listed as belonging to his wife, Jill, which was listed between $1,001-$15,000 a year after being listed as having a value between $50,001-$100,000. Even if every asset the Bidens list was at the highest possible value in the reported range, their total assets still fall below $1 million.

Although LegiStorm concentrates on the legislative rather than executive branch, we have added the financial disclosures of former senators Obama and Biden for completeness. All members of Congress and senior staff were also required to fill out financial disclosure forms by the May 16 deadline, although the disclosures for the members of Congress will not be released until mid-June. LegiStorm will add all the congressional financial disclosure forms as soon as they are available.
