Amtrak government affairs director joins Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation

Posted by John Sugden on June 18, 2014
A former senior Senate staffer and Amtrak government affairs official has taken the fast track back to Capitol Hill.

Amtrak's senior director for government affairs, Matthew Kelly, recently joined Sen. Jay Rockefeller's (D-W.Va.) staff on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee as a professional staff member.

Amtrak, also known as the National Railroad Passenger Corp., receives government funding but is run as a for-profit company. Amtrak recently requested a new budget of $1.62 billion, a more than $250 million increase from its current level.

Kelly, who holds a master's in transportation policy from George Mason University, spent the past 5 years working for the railroad service, most of the latter three as senior director of government affairs.

Kelly joined the late Sen. Arlen Specter's (D-Pa.) staff in 2003, eventually climbing the policy ranks to legislative assistant before departing for Amtrak.
