Rep. Larson holding forum to discuss situation in Iraq

Posted by John Sugden on June 19, 2014

More than a decade after voting against the Iraq war, a leading Democrat is set to hold a forum in his district to get feedback from constituents and reiterate his concern about further involvement in the country.

Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.), a consistent opponent of the war in Iraq since he voted against sending troops in 2002, is looking to open a dialogue about future U.S. involvement during a town hall forum this Sunday in West Hartford. He stressed the importance of his constituents' ability to make their views known on the topic, but he made his own opinion clear.

"The United States cannot afford to police the world and go it alone in what continues to be an area requiring global and regional support," he said.

The issue is likely a safe bet for Larson, the former chairman of the Democratic Caucus. Public opinion polls show scant support for further military intervention in the region.

Renewed sectarian violence in Iraq has shaken the country's fledgling democracy to the core, giving rise to debate about America's past and future involvement there.
