Former Rubio staffer now lobbying on Mexican relations

Posted by Steve Shapiro on Dec. 8, 2015

As immigration becomes a key issue for Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and other presidential hopefuls, a former legislative assistant of his has filed as a lobbyist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to work on economic relations with Canada and Mexico.

Victor Cervino joined Rubio shortly after he arrived in the Senate in 2011 and served in his office until March of this year. Cervino first joined the Senate in 2005 as a correspondence assistant with former Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.). Prior, he had been a policy analyst with the Heritage Foundation focusing on Latin America. Cervino is from Havana, Cuba.

Cervino worked for Martinez until 2009, when the senator resigned from office and began a lobbying career. Cervino became a legislative correspondent in 2006 and was promoted to the legislative assistant position in 2007. He stayed on with Martinez's successor, Sen. George LeMieux (R-Fla.), as a legislative assistant and joined Rubio when LeMieux's placeholder term ended.
