Boehner still paying staffers — at six-figure levels

Posted by Sean Myers on March 3, 2016

John Boehner (R-Ohio) paid two staff members a total of $48,000 for two months of work in the Office of the Former Speaker.

Amy Lozupone and Michael Sommers have been with Boehner for years: Sommers got his start on Boehner's staff in 1997 as an intern and worked his way up to chief of staff; Lozupone started working for Boehner in 2001 as deputy staff director, eventually becoming the director of administrative operations.

Boehner hired Sommers to the Office of the Former Speaker as a secretary and paid him $22,185 for work done during November and December. Lozupone was hired as an administrative assistant and paid $26,414 during the same time period.

The Office of the Former Speaker is a governmental office provided by law to representatives who vacate the speaker's position. It is funded by taxpayers and can have up to three staffers. It cannot be used for political purposes and can be held by Boehner for the next five years, even if he gets a job in the private sector.
