Senate staffer fills prescription for new job

Posted by Nate Hoffman on May 18, 2016

A health policy aide to the senior senator from the Hoosier state has left for the nation's pharmacy benefit managers' trade association.

Casey Murphy is now the senior director for federal affairs for the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association after serving as health policy director since January for retiring Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.). The PCMA has recently lobbied on S. 524, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016, which Coats co-sponsored. The bill would authorize the U.S. attorney general to award grants to help out with the national opioid epidemic. In Coats's state, the increased abuse of Opana, a prescription painkiller, has been correlated with an increased rate of HIV. The bill is currently on the Senate schedule.

Murphy, a San Antonio native, worked with Coats as a legislative assistant before becoming the health policy director. Previously, she served in the offices of Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-N.J.) and former Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.). During her previous hiatus from Congress, she was a legislative consultant for the Flexible Packaging Association.
