Markey top aide strikes gold with first lobbying client

The former top aide to Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has gone into the lobbying business for himself and struck gold - literally - with his first client.

Mark Bayer's new company, Bayer Strategic Consulting, has signed up Romios Gold Resources Inc. as a client. The Toronto-based mining firm - which focuses on gold, silver and copper - has never before registered a lobbyist.

Bayer left Markey's office earlier this month after filling in the top job for only a few weeks, although before that he had been with Markey from 2007 until July 2015. He also worked as a policy adviser for Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Markey is a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, serving as ranking member of its Superfund, Waste Management and Regulatory Oversight Subcommittee.
