Retiring House members spending less in 2016

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Dec. 12, 2016

Members of the House who planned their retirement at the end of this 114th Congress have spent less of their 2016 budgets than average, according to a new analysis by LegiStorm.

As of Sept. 30, retiring House members used only 63.42 percent of their 2016 budgets on average, below the 66.16 percent average for all members. Retiring Reps. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) and Scott Rigell (R-Va.) each spent more than 70 percent of their budgets, while Reps. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Stephen Fincher (R-Tenn.) kept their expenses to under 55 percent of their respective budgets.

The spending savings may be illusory. In the past, retiring members have often provided hefty departing bonuses to loyal staffers in the fourth quarter, so these budget savings may disappear by the New Year.
