VFW adds Rep. Gabbard aide to legislative team

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on May 31, 2017

The Veterans of Foreign Wars added Rep. Tulsi Gabbard's (D-Hawaii) military legislative assistant to its legislative staff this month.

John Towles, now the VFW's deputy legislative director, originally joined Gabbard's office as a fellow through the House Wounded Warrior Program, a House Chief Administrative Officer program that pays salaries for certain veterans working for Congress. After a stint as the national director for veterans outreach with Sen. Bernie Sanders' (D-Vt.) presidential campaign, the Army veteran returned to Gabbard's office as a legislative assistant handling military issues.

The VFW lists veteran health-care issues, employment services and border security among its 2017 legislative priorities. In addition to employing its own in-house lobbying team, the group encourages its members to get involved in political advocacy at a grassroots level.
