Democrats beating GOP in Fourth of July town halls

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on July 5, 2017

Compared to their Democratic counterparts, Republicans in Congress continue to shy away from town halls over the Independence Day recess, according to a LegiStorm analysis.

Only ten Republican members are holding meetings with constituents during this year's break, with a total of 27 in-person town halls from July 1 to 10.

Republicans have shifted away from in-person town halls since President Trump’s inauguration. While town halls this time of year are normally quiet, under-the-radar affairs, this year’s meetings have seen hostility from constituents urging Republican senators to vote against the GOP’s proposed health-care plan.

25 Democratic members are holding a total of 54 in-person town halls during the same period, up from only eight Democrats who held in-person meetings this time last year. Democrats have taken advantage of Republicans’ lack of constituent meetings in recent months, with some members even holding town halls in neighboring Republican districts to tout Democrats' resistence to GOP health bills.
