Private groups spending big on congressional Democrats

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on July 31, 2017

Democrats in Congress sure seem to be jumping at the chance to get as far away as possible from Washington these days. Private sponsors have spent 55 percent more on trips for congressional Democrats than Republicans so far this year, largely due to one particular think tank's spending.

Democratic members have taken 102 privately sponsored trips worth a total of $836,000. Republican counterparts have taken 111 trips during the same period but have stayed closer to home than Democrats.

The Democrats' biggest trip sponsor so far this year is the Aspen Institute, which has spent more than more than $615,000 to send congressional Democrats to programs and conferences in Japan, South Korea, Germany and India. The think tank has spent only $193,000 on Republican members this year.

The Aspen Institute, which bills itself as a "nonpartisan forum for values-based leadership and the exchange of ideas," perennially makes the list as one of the top spenders on congressional travel.
