Trump-tied Sonoran lands Afghan government contract

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Aug. 7, 2017

Amid White House struggles to update the country's Afghanistan strategy, a lobbying group with close ties to Donald Trump added the Afghan government as a client.

The Afghan Embassy in Washington hired Sonoran Policy Group as a foreign agent for "executive branch and legislative engagement," "defense consultation," "strategic advice pertaining to extremism/terrorism" and "promotion of democracy and foreign direct involvement," according to a disclosure form filed last week. The $40,000-per-month contract lasts from August through at least October.

The firm's staff roster includes a number of former high-level Trump advisers, including Sonoran president Stuart Jolly, the former political director of a pro-Trump PAC; Jacob Daniels, who headed Trump's campaign efforts in Michigan; and Robin Townley, who was fired from Trump's National Security Council after being denied a top-secret security clearance.

Sonoran picked up its first foreign-government client, New Zealand, in December and has since represented a handful of other states, including Saudi Arabia and the Czech Republic.
