Ex-Trump adviser with Kremlin ties files as lobbyist

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Aug. 8, 2017

Michael Caputo, the Republican strategist whose ties to the Kremlin and Donald Trump's presidential campaign led to his testimony before the House Intelligence Committee last month, has disclosed his status as a new federal lobbyist — although not for Russia.

The former Trump-campaign communications adviser is the only lobbyist listed on the Zeppelin Communications filing. Law firm Weisbrod Matteis and Copley PLLC hired the public affairs group to lobby Congress and the Trump administration on Federal Emergency Management Agency payouts to natural-disaster victims who purchased federal flood insurance, according to a recent disclosure form.

Caputo made headlines in July when he denied knowing of any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during a closed-door House Intelligence Committee testimony. Caputo lived in Russia in the 1990s and has done public-relations and consulting work for the Russian government, but said that work did not overlap with the Trump presidential campaign.
