Senate pays thousands more than House for same job titles

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on March 26, 2018

For House staffers, landing the same job on the Senate side isn't a lateral job move — it's one that brings more responsibility and, usually, a lot more pay.

If you're a legislative assistant in the House, you'll make a median salary of $50,000, according to a new salary analysis tool that LegiStorm has developed. Scoring the same position in the Senate could net you an extra $24,000 per year, with a median pay of $74,000. Even more dramatic a pay difference, legislative directors in the House make about $86,000 a year versus $137,000 for LDs in the Senate.

But the increases aren't limited to policy positions. Field representatives working in the district make about $8,000 less than their Senate counterparts. Even staff assistants — one of the lowest-paying positions — make about $1,300 more in the Senate.

The pay differences are indicative of the different political stakes in the House and the Senate. With fewer members each representing entire states, the Senate has staffs that are larger, more specialized and who have more influence on the legislative agenda compared to the House.
