Sen. Murkowski hires fundraiser

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on June 29, 2018

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee's newest hire has moved from Alaska, where she was a fundraiser for major Republicans - including committee chair Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).

Michelle Toohey joins the committee as a staff writer and communication adviser. As recently as last month, Toohey and her husband hosted fundraising efforts for prominent Republican candidates, including Mike Dunleavy, who resigned as an Alaskan state senator to run for governor this year. The couple also hosted a 2015 fundraiser for Murkowski as part of a push to build a record war chest for the senator.

Toohey's politial experience also includes positions as chief of staff to then-Alaskan Lieutenant Gov. Mead Treadwell and campaign manager to former Gov. Sean Parnell. Her husband, Cam, is a Shell executive and the son of former Alaskan state Rep. Cynthia Toohey (R). During the President George W. Bush administration, Cam moved from Shell to a U.S. Interior Department post, leading one Democratic critic to describe it as an "ethical oil spill."
