Former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey, a close associate of Rudy Giuliani, has registered as a foreign agent on behalf of an Iranian political-opposition group.
Mukasey is representing the National Council of Resistance of Iran, a France-based coalition closely associated with the People's Mujahedin of Iran (MEK) militant group, which aims to overthrow the Iranian government. The U.S. government has at times classified both groups as terrorist organizations.
Mukasey, who served as USAG under President George W. Bush, will "communicate with executive branch and legislative officials regarding U.S. policies toward Iran and the National Council of Resistance of Iran and its members," according to a recent Justice Department filing. He is working at no charge to NCRI, excluding any travel expenses.
Mukasey is a longtime associate of Rudy Giuliani, Trump's personal attorney. In 2017, the two represented a Turkish client accused of helping Iran to evade U.S. sanctions.
He is also the father of Marc Mukasey, a former law partner to Giuliani. Marc's legal clients this year have reportedly included the Trump Foundation, as well as much of the Trump clan -- Donald Jr., Ivanka, Eric and the president himself.
This isn't Michael Mukasey's first registration as a foreign agent: In 2018, he worked as part of a Debevoise & Plimpton team seeking to resolve Qatar's diplomatic crisis.
