Democrats outspend GOP in Q1 office budgets

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on June 21, 2021

House Democrats outspent Republicans in their official Q1 budgets, according to LegiStorm data.

Democrats so far make up seven of 2021's top 10 spenders; Republicans make up eight of the 10 lowest.

Only one member, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), is on pace to overspend her allowances. Her office used 26.1 percent of its funds by the end of the first quarter.

Reps. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.), David Trone (D-Md.), Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), Carol Miller (D-W.V.), André Carson (D-Ind.) and Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) make up the other top spenders, though each stayed under 25 percent of her or his budget for the quarter.

The average Democratic representative used 19.1 percent of her or his office budget in that time, while the average Republican used 17.9 percent. If those spending trends continue for the year, Democrats will average 6.7 percent higher spending than their GOP counterparts. Democrats outspent Republicans by 4.6 percent last year and by 2.3 percent in 2019.

Any unspent office funds are returned to the U.S. Treasury.
