Rep. DeSantis hires a legislative director who use to lobby for an organization that has been key in the shutdown

Posted by Katie Barrows on Oct. 17, 2013

The new legislative director for Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) most recently lobbied for an organization that played a key role in crafting the shutdown strategy for Republicans.

The staffer is Heritage Action for America's former legislative strategist, Dustin Carmack. Heritage Action is the lobbying-arm of the conservative think tank, The Heritage Foundation. The group - now led by former Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), a tea party favorite - has played an influential role in the shutdown by insisting that defunding Obamacare be a key part of any efforts to keep the government open.

Carmack has had a long tenure with Heritage. He started as a deputy executive branch liaison for the Heritage Foundation in 2008, and then moved to the Heritage Action to become their government relations deputy.
