Sen. Murkowski gives GOP ally's son summer internship

Posted by Katie Barrows on Dec. 9, 2013

The latest salary records reveal that Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) hired the son of the lieutentant governor who hopes to unseat her colleague, Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska).

The hire is all-the-more notable because the intern's father is running in a contested GOP primary against a former rival who defeated her in her last Republican primary.

Will Treadwell served as an intern in Sen. Lisa Murkowski's (R-Alaska) office this past summer. He is the son of Alaska's lieutenant governor and Republican candidate for Senate, Mead Treadwell. The senior Treadwell is competing against two other GOP candidates for the Republican nomination -  former Alaska Natural Resources Commissioner Dan Sullivan and the 2010 Tea Party challenger to Murkowski, Joe Miller.

In 2010, Miller defeated Murkowski in the Republican primary but ended up losing to her in the general election where she waged a write-in campaign against him. Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska), who currently holds the seat up for grabs in the 2014 election, leads all three GOP candidates in initial polls.

As a recent high school graduate, Will Treadwell was one of the younger interns on the Hill. Many members of Congress require their interns to be college students or recent college graduates. Murkowski's internship application is less restrictive, with her website stating that Washington, D.C. internships are "available for recent high school graduates, current college students, and recent college graduates." Treadwell currently is a freshman at the Catholic University of America.
