Rep. Cooper reaches for the stars with new military aide

Posted by Nate Hoffman on Jan. 16, 2014

While Capitol Hill staffers often feel they are under constant siege, that's nothing for Rep. Jim Cooper's (D-Tenn.) new military assistant.

Gabe Surratt, a reserve Army captain, received the Bronze Star Medal for his above-and-beyond service during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, where he served under constant threat of attack on the eastern border with Pakistan in a special ops unit. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) bestowed the honor on him. McKeon first met Surratt when he interned for the committee in 2012, working primarily on the Pentagon's annual budget. Surratt also served a year-long tour as a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Before commissioning for the Army, Surratt worked as a software engineer for Rockwell Collins Inc. and Northrop Grumman Inc. Cooper is currently the ranking member of the HASC's Strategic Forces Subcommittee and a member of the committee's Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee.
