Rep. Carson takes the mother (in-law) of all trips to the Holy Land

Posted by Katie Barrows on March 11, 2014

One lawmaker might have had a classic joke in mind - "Take my mother-in-law... please!" - with his latest overseas voyage.

Rep. André Carson (D-Ind.) traveled to Israel last month but instead of taking his daughter or wife, he brought his mother-in-law, Brenda Shaheed. The eight day trip sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation was meant to educate the Congressional Black Caucus on the U.S.-Israel relationship. The AIEF is an arm of American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the pro-Israel lobby. On the trip, members met with members of the Knesset, visited historical sites within the country and attended seminars on issues important to the region. The AIEF footed the nearly $25,000 bill, which included meals, lodging, security and tour guides.

It's unusual to see an in-law accompany a member on privately funded trips, though it is not against House ethics rules. The rules state that private sponsors can pay for a "relative" of the member but does not define this term.
