Smith staffer leaves the congressional womb, heads to ACOG

Posted by Steve Shapiro on Dec. 11, 2015

The gestation of a Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) legislative assistant's congressional career is now complete as she has left his office for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Rebecca Nathanson took a federal affairs manager position with ACOG last month after working in Smith's office for a little more than four years. She began as an intern in 2011, returned in 2013 and quickly rose in the ranks. Nathanson became Smith's scheduler at the beginning of 2013, later switching to the legislative side, eventually becoming senior legislative assistant.

While with Smith, Nathanson covered women's health, immigration, social security, pensions, agriculture and civil rights issues. In between her internship and rejoining Smith as a scheduler, Nathanson worked as an intern for the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project and a field organizer for Organizing for America, a grassroots project supporting President Obama's 2012 re-election campaign.
